Shading The Camera (White Balance)

While pointing the camera to an evenly lit white surface, you can set your individual R, G, B gains to achieve 100% white by using the waveform monitor in RGB mode and the vectorscope (to eliminate any color differences).  A properly white balanced camera provides no vector deflection when pointed to a pure white subject.

Top picture is showing RGB imbalance; bottom picture with RGB imbalance corrected.

Some camera operators use off-white charts to auto-white balance their cameras in order to achieve a warmer or cooler look.  Although this is a quick camera setup method, better and more accurate results may be achieved by adjusting the camera’s color matrix.
